Diabetics with Vision Problems Can Now Get a Free Blood Glucose Meter with Audio Readings

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) March 29, 2006

According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes are more likely to develop vision problems including blindness, and they and 40% more likely to develop glaucoma and 60% more likely to develop cataracts. Since vision problems with diabetes are common it is often hard for these diabetics to read their blood glucose meters. Diabetics now have another option for home blood glucose testing. New audio meters solve diabetes monitoring issues, allowing people with visual impairments to do their own glucose testing at home. There are several free blood glucose meters on the market that give verbal instructions to guide a person through the entire testing procedure and give verbal test results.

American Diabetes Services, the nations’ leading distributor of free brand name Diabetes Equipment, including free blood glucose meters, through Medicare and private insurance is pleased to now offer the Prodigy Blood Glucose Monitor for its visually impaired customers. American Diabetes Services provides free or very low cost diabetic testing supplies, including free blood glucose meters, to patients throughout the country, delivered directly to their home with free shipping.

According to the American Diabetic Association (ADA), There are 20.8 million people in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 6.2 million people (nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

Vision problem with diabetes is a common, but serious side affect of the disease. Complications from diabetes are the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age. Because diabetes leads to 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness each year, proper diabetes care and management is essential to reduce the risk for this and other serious, sometimes life-threatening complications.

Research shows that in people with type 1 diabetes, therapy that overcome diabetes monitoring issues and keeps blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible reduces damage to the eyes by 76% (New England Journal of Medicine, September 30, 1993). Experts believe that these results can also be applied to those with type 2 diabetes.

As a general rule, the ADA recommends that most patients with type 1 diabetes test glucose three or more times per day. Pregnant women taking insulin for gestational diabetes should test two times per day. ADA does not specify how often people with type 2 diabetes should test their glucose, but testing often helps control diabetes and reduce vision problems with diabetes. Many patients are eligible for a free blood glucose meter through their insurance or Medicare, making it easier to solve their diabetes monitoring issues.

Diabetes is associated with an increased risk for a number of serious, sometimes life-threatening complications and certain populations experience an even greater threat. Good diabetes management can help reduce your risk. However many people are not even aware that they have diabetes until they develop one of its complications.

How does Diabetes hurt the skin? & what are the signs of Diabetes?

Question by Socially Correct: How does Diabetes hurt the skin? & what are the signs of Diabetes?
I read on the doctors wall where they have posters informing you of different diseases and they had one where diabetes can hurt your skin and said “Protect Your Skin” And I am just curious to know. How does diabetes hurt your skin? What would your skin look like when it is affected by diabetes?
My concern is because my mom know has Diabetes type 2 and I am concern for myself and not sure if I have the signs. No health insurance.

Best answer:

Answer by Misz_Jazzy
A lot of times certain diabetic medicines make your skin more susceptible to burns when being in the sun, and when your diabetic it takes a lot longer for your blood to clot when you get a scratch or a sore. Since it takes longer for these things to heal you also become more open to infections and etc.

Healthy and Fulfilling Life despite Diabetes

I’m Deborah Susan, a dietician and personal trainer specializing in nutrition, physical fitness and diabetes diet plan for diabetics. Over the years I’ve noticed a trend in the questions that diabetics and their family members have been asking. Also, many of my clients had often suggested I not let my knowledge and experience go waste; instead, I should write a book that would help society cope and live a healthy life despite diabetes. A friend recently suggested I start with an article and if I like the response I could write a book.

Although many have said I have a way with words, I must state that I am not a writer or author and have until today, never written so much as an article let alone a book. I’ve decided to take the plunge primarily because I have seen intense and unnecessary suffering caused by wrong information, phobia, misguidance and myths. Lack of proper guidance and knowledge ultimately proves expensive in more ways than can be imagined.

In writing these article, it is my ardent desire to provide useful, practical knowledge (including a few low fat low carb recipes for diabetic) to help people living with diabetes to make decisions that enable them to live successfully with diabetes.

To begin with, although 99% of you probably already know what diabetes is, I’d like to define it precisely so that at the end of this first article, we are all on the same page and do not have differing ideas on what diabetes is.

Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood because (a) your pancreas (not kidneys) does not produce enough insulin or (b) your body cells are resistant to the action of insulin, that’s why we take insulin diabetic syringes.

]]>

When your blood glucose level rises, the glucose cannot get into the cells which means despite all the sugar, your body is deprived of energy. Lack of energy triggers the break down and conversion of fat and muscles into alternate source of energy. Always prefer to use diabetic glucose meter for checking your glucose level regularly

Since the Glucose in your blood does not get utilized, it gets flushed out through urine. Meanwhile the body breaks down fat and muscle as an alternate energy source causing rapid (and dangerous) weight loss. Rapid break down of fat causes build up of toxic chemicals in your blood. If left unattended, all organs in the body begin to deteriorate and fail, ultimately leading to death – and a painful one at that.

Myth: Diabetes begins with Type 1 and then progress to Type 2

Truth: Wrong! Type 1 and Type 2 are two totally different types of diabetes

People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes do not produce any insulin. They need to be treated with insulin given by insulin syringes & injection or via diabetes Insulin Pump. (Insulin via a tablet would not be effective as it would be destroyed in the digestion process).

This is the more common form of diabetes. Obesity is the primary reason for Type 2 diabetes. People diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes do not produce sufficient quantities of insulin. Initially your pancreas respond to the demand (created by obesity), by producing more insulin. However, it cannot do so indefinitely. Corrective action includes reducing body fat by checking through Body Fat Scales and leading a healthier lifestyle. If corrective action is taken soon enough, then people suffering from Type 2 diabetes need not take any medication such as glucose tablets or glucose supplements and can lead a healthy normal life. Failure to take corrective action will create a need for insulin injections to supplement the inadequate quantum of insulin produced by your pancreas.

Myth: Type 1 diabetes is serious

Truth: Yes and No. However Type 2 likely to be more harmful because people often have it for years before being diagnosed. Having it for years can lead to long term complications.

Now that we know what diabetes is, in my next article I shall attempt to answer the second most frequently asked question: Why does diabetes develop?

I hope my effort in writing these articles helps you lead a more knowledgeable and healthier life.

Typefreediabetes offers a full line of diabetic testing supplies, including incontinence products for women; diabetes supplements, seamless diabetic socks, blood pressure monitor, durable diabetes medical equipment, diabetic dessert and many other home health care products and supplies. Answer by ♪♫ Seattle ♫♪
Hi there…in order to confirm if a cat has diabetes there needs to be a blood glucose test done from your vet. If the blood sugar is elevated the vet will then be able to give you the appropriate course of care for the cat. Here are a few website articles on feline diabetes mellitus:
